The 41st annual Kilmore Quay Seafood Festival was officially opened this evening (Thursday) by local musician Liam Bates following a parade of local groups from the Stella Maris Centre to the stage on the quayside.

Jesse Sludds was on stage tonight (Thursday) fresh from the Shania Twain Concert and he performed excellently. But plenty of music, dancing and entertainment happening over the weekend and the Children’s Summer camp with Red Moon Theatre features a sandcastle competition and beach games on Friday and more fun and games with Tomhaggard Clean Coast Group on the little beach of Saturday.

Festive proceedings commenced with a Grand Parade featuring Piper Hamish, Peter Moran, Coast Guard, Red Moon Theatre Company, Kilmore ICA, Kilmore Athletic Club, Kilmore GAA Club, First Responders, Tomhaggard Clean Coast, RNLI, the Becky Sheil Dancers, Kilmore Scouts and Write By The Sea. They were given a rousing reception on arrival at the quayside by the large attendance that gathered in the summer sunshine.

Mr Bates welcomed everybody to Kilmore Quay for “a weekend of summer celebration with lots of family fun activities and family favourites, and, of course, plenty of locally caught delicious seafood to enjoy.

He complimented all the groups taking part and outlined the continuity of success between the community groups and their dedication to a festival of celebration now in its 41st year.

Friday events in the Stella Maris Centre from 11am to 5pm will be a Live Cooking Demonstration and Wine Appreciation Day with award winning chefs and the master of ceremonies Sallyanne Clarke. Locally sourced fresh fish and shellfish will be on sale but come early as the quantity is limited!

The annual festival lecture and coastal walk with Jim Hurley is on the agenda and Wexford Camera Club’s annual exhibition was officially opened tonight (Thursday) by Cathaoirleach of Rosslare Municipal District, Cllr Frank Staples in the Stella Maris Centre and it is open to the public throughout the weekend. Well worth a visit!

EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0 – Breyer: “Our children lose out” Today, the European Parliament allowed the suspicionless mass scanning of private communications (“Chat Control 1.0”) to pass, a measure it had rejected twice in March. Although a majority of voting Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) actually opposed the regulation (314 against, 276 in favor, 17 abstentions), the motion to reject it failed to secure the required absolute majority of 361 votes. As a result, mass scanning is now permitted again until 2028. A symbolic exemption was adopted for encrypted communications—though in practice, service providers do not scan these anyway. Furthermore, while a majority of voting MEPs wanted to restrict the scanning of private communications strictly to suspects identified by the judiciary (322 to 255 votes), this amendment likewise fell short of the required absolute majority. Dr. Patrick Breyer, civil rights activist and former Member of the European Parliament (MEP), warns of the consequences: “The fact that Chat Control is moving forward against the will of the majority of voting MEPs is a farce and damages democracy. Our children are the real losers in this undemocratic process. The passage of a genuine, permanent child protection regulation is now in serious jeopardy. The Council will never agree to a desperately needed paradigm shift as long as they can simply stick to the old approach of suspicionless scanning at the whim of the tech industry.” Despite the legislative defeat, Breyer remains defiant regarding the upcoming negotiations: “Today’s vote on the interim regulation was a setback, but the political battle over the permanent ‘Chat Control 2.0’ is just getting started. The resistance we saw in Parliament today was so strong that finding a majority for permanent, suspicionless mass scanning in future negotiations is a complete pipe dream.” Breyer fundamentally rejects the mass surveillance approach: “Trying to protect children with suspicionless mass surveillance is like frantically mopping the floor while the faucet is still running. Blanket chat control is just as unacceptable as indiscriminately opening everyone’s physical mail. For five years, this failed system has served as a smokescreen to delay real action, all while overwhelming the police with false alarms. We need more child protection, not less—but we need effective protection, not the illusion of security.” What happens next? The interim regulation passed today will remain in effect until 2028, or until an agreement on a permanent regulation is reached. Negotiations for the permanent law will resume in September. The core dispute between the EU Parliament, member state governments, and the EU Commission remains the scanning of private chats: should it be indiscriminate, or targeted at criminal suspects? What changes with the return of Chat Control 1.0—and what stays the same: - What is coming back: US tech companies are once again allowed to scan private messages without a warrant or prior suspicion. This affects direct messages on platforms like Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, Skype, and Xbox, as well as emails via Google’s Gmail and Apple’s iCloud. - What remains unchanged: Public social media posts and files hosted in cloud storage could already be scanned without this law. Furthermore, private messages can always be reported by users, or monitored by authorities using targeted, court-ordered wiretapping. - What is still NOT being scanned: End-to-end encrypted chats, such as those on WhatsApp, have always been exempt from these scans. Additionally, European providers of messaging and email services have never implemented chat control measures. Why Chat Control is the wrong approach: - Since 2022, the volume of suspected abuse reports from the US has already dropped by 50 percent due to the growing use of message encryption. - According to EU Commission figures, mass scanning of private chats accounted for only 36 percent of all abuse reports in 2024 (the majority came from public posts and cloud storage). - The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reports that 48 percent of all incoming alerts are not criminally relevant in the first place. - Crime statistics reveal that 40 percent of the resulting investigations actually target minors themselves. - Under the chat control system, an estimated 99 percent of reports generated by Meta consist of previously known material, which generally does little to stop ongoing, active abuse. - The EU Commission admits there is no evidence that suspicionless scanning of private communications has led to an increase in criminal convictions or in rescued children. Talk of averting a “protection gap” is therefore highly misleading. The most effective law enforcement tools—court-ordered wiretaps, user reports, and the scanning of public platforms and cloud storage—were never at risk and remain fully intact. The only practice that was temporarily banned since April was the indiscriminate, warrantless searching of private, unencrypted messages of innocent people on a handful of US platforms. Background: The deadlock over a permanent solution In parallel, negotiations are ongoing for a permanent regulation to protect children from sexualized online violence (the “CSAM Regulation” or “Chat Control 2.0”). In these talks, the EU Parliament is pushing for a paradigm shift in how we approach online child safety, demanding: - Mandatory, targeted detection orders against actual criminal suspects, rather than blanket mass scanning left to the tech industry’s discretion. - An EU Child Protection Centre tasked with the systematic removal of known abuse material from the public internet. - Strict security standards for messaging apps (“Security by Design”) to prevent cyber grooming. This permanent legislation has stalled because EU member states insist on maintaining the outdated approach of voluntary, suspicionless scanning of private communications. Critics warn that repeatedly extending the interim rules removes the political pressure needed to reach a viable, permanent agreement. Ultimately, clinging to the status quo threatens to derail real progress on child protection. Patrick Breyer sums up the problem: “As long as EU governments can use procedural loopholes to continually extend their comfortable status quo of voluntary, indiscriminate mass scanning, they have zero incentive to engage with the Parliament’s targeted, legally sound, and far more effective child protection strategy. “The Voices of Survivors: “We need privacy to bring abusers to justice” Survivors of sexual violence explicitly emphasize that untargeted Chat Control did not help victims: Alexander Hanff, survivor of child sexual abuse and privacy advocate, clarifies: “As a survivor I relied on confidential communications to tell my story and find justice for 28 schoolboys—myself included—resulting in the conviction of multiple offenders. We survivors need privacy, because without it we lose our voice. Chat Control was not created to protect children. It was about Big Tech companies like Meta or Google wanting access to our data for profiteering, and states attempting to expand mass surveillance. The EU Commission has wasted five years and millions of euros on algorithms that cannot protect children and were never meant to. This money should have been diverted to real policing, causal research, and support for survivors, millions of whom have never received any support at all.” Marcel Schneider* (name changed), a survivor who has been suing Meta in court over its voluntary Chat Control, adds: “Anyone mourning the end of Chat Control has not understood what actually helps survivors of sexual violence. Mass surveillance by corporations like Meta does not prevent abuse. Genuine protection means: deleting material at the source, proactive police work on the Darknet, and apps that are safe by design for children from the very start.” Dorothée Hahne, founding member and vice-chair of the survivors’ initiative MOGiS e.V. (A Voice for Survivors), emphasizes the danger mass surveillance poses to victims themselves: “As survivors, we see our ‘safe spaces’, our protected areas and communication channels, endangered or destroyed by this. For survivors, this need is existential.“

The new GPT-5.6 family: Luna, Terra, Sol 9th July 2026 OpenAI’s latest flagship model hit general availability this morning, and comes in three sizes: Luna, Terra, and Sol (from smallest to largest). The new models are priced per 1M input/output tokens as Luna $1/$6, Terra $2.50/$15, Sol $5/$30. For comparison, the Claude Opus series are $5/$25 and the Claude Fable 5 is $10/$50, but price-per-million tokens doesn’t tell us much now that the number of reasoning tokens can differ so much between models for the same task. All three models have a February 16th 2026 knowledge cutoff, a million token context window, and 128,000 maximum output tokens. OpenAI’s biggest benchmark claim concerns long-running agentic performance, with one benchmark showing all three models outperforming Claude Fable 5: We trained GPT-5.6 to get more useful work from every token. On Agents’ Last Exam, an evaluation of long-running professional workflows across 55 fields, GPT-5.6 Sol sets a new high of 53.6, eclipsing Claude Fable 5 (adaptive reasoning) by 13.1 points. Even at medium reasoning, it beats Fable 5 by 11.4 points at roughly one-quarter the estimated cost. That efficiency extends to smaller models, which are essential to making intelligence more abundant and affordable: GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna outperform Fable 5 at around one-sixteenth the cost. Amusingly, one self-reported benchmark that Fable 5 crushed the GPT-5.6 family on was SWE-Bench Pro, where Fable 5 got 80% compared to GPT-5.6 Sol getting 64.6%. This may help explain why OpenAI chose to publish this article yesterday specifically calling out SWE-Bench Pro for problems they found while auditing that benchmark: In light of these results, we estimate that ~30% of SWE-bench Pro tasks are broken, and advise that model developers carefully examine results I’ve had some early access to GPT-5.6 Sol—it’s definitely very competent, though so far it hasn’t struck me as better than Fable at the kind of complex coding tasks I’ve been using with Anthropic’s model. As usual, the model guidance for using GPT-5.6 has the most interesting details. There are a bunch of new API features that I need to explore (and probably add support for in LLM), including: - Programmatic Tool Calling allows the models to “compose and run JavaScript that orchestrates tool calls”—which sounds to me like it could help bridge the gap between MCPs and full terminal sessions that can compose CLI utilities in useful ways. Also reminiscent of the dynamic filtering mechanism Anthropic added to their web search tool, which allows code execution against web results as part of a single model turn. - Multi-agent lets the model “spin up subagents for parallel, focused work”—the sub-agent pattern now baked into the core API. - Prompt cache breakpoints brings the Claude model of prompt caching to OpenAI, letting you be explicit about where the cache breakpoints are rather than relying on the API to detect them automatically. Personally I much prefer automatic detection (still supported by OpenAI), but presumably there are optimization cost savings to be had here if you put the work in. - You can now set detail: original on image requests to avoid resizing the image at all before it is processed. Here’s a full page with 18 different pelicans—for reasoning efforts none, low, medium, high, xhigh, and max across the three different models. It also lists their token and calculated costs—the least expensive was gpt-5.6-luna at effort none for 0.71 cents, the most expensive was gpt-5.6-sol at max reasoning level for 48.55 cents. Fethard RNLI lifeboat crew launched at 8.30am his morning (Thursday) amid concerns that a dog walker may get into difficulty trying to rescue a dog after a member of the public had contacted the Irish Coast Guard for help when a dog became trapped in the oyster beds at Woodstown Beach.

The volunteer crew made their way by road and launched the lifeboat at Duncannon. Conditions were good with excellent visibility and a calm sea.

At 9.15am, just before the lifeboat arrived on scene, the Irish Coast Guard advised that the dog had freed itself and had reunited with its owner. Both owner and dog were safe and well. Fethard RNLI was stood down and returned to recover at Duncannon. The lifeboat returned to station and was washed down and refuelled ready for service.

This call-out comes on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Fethard RNLI’s reopening. It also marked the first call-out for volunteer crew member Rebecca Doyle, whose father John Doyle played a pivotal role in the reopening of the lifeboat station in 1996.

Speaking on the call-out, volunteer crew member Rebecca Doyle said; “Well done to the dog walker who did the right thing by calling for help. We were relieved to hear that dog had freed itself from danger.

“If your dog goes into the water or gets stuck, don’t go in after them. Move to a place where the dog could easily get out and call them – they will probably get out by themselves. If you’re worried your dog can’t get out, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”

Wexford’s Mental Health Services Working Group conducted a recent online survey examining the standard of mental health services available across County Wexford.

There was an overwhelming response to the survey which demonstrates just how important this issue is to people throughout the county.

Key findings from the survey included:

  • 80% of respondents rated the quality of mental health services in County Wexford as either “poor” or “very poor.”
  • 80% of respondents said they have had trouble managing their own mental health.
  • 91% of respondents aged between 18 and 24 said they have struggled to manage their mental health.

CLLR AOIFE ROSE O’BRIEN “As a county, we must ensure that services are adequately resourced to meet growing demand and that every person can access the lifesaving care they need when they need it.”

Chairperson of the working group, Cllr AoifeRose O’Brien stated that the findings are “deeply concerning, but sadly not surprising. “While these findings are frightening, they also provide an opportunity. They represent the voices of people who believe that mental health services in County Wexford can and must be improved. No one should have to face a mental health crisis without timely, accessible, and effective support. As a county, we must ensure that services are adequately resourced to meet growing demand and that every person can access the lifesaving care they need when they need it.”

“The Wexford Mental Health Services Working Group will continue to engage with local representatives, healthcare providers, and policymakers to ensure that the voices of the people of Wexford are heard. We believe these findings demonstrate an urgent need for immediate investment in mental health services across the county.”

“Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the survey. Your honesty and willingness to share your experiences have strengthened our evidence base and will help inform our ongoing campaign to secure the high-quality mental health services that the people of County Wexford deserve,” concluded Cllr O’Brien.

Future plans for the working group include the roll out of another survey, this time designated to capture the lived experience of the younger members of our communities. An under 18s survey has been designed by the FDYS and Comhairle na nÓg and is set to be launched in September 2026.

Communication between the working group and stakeholders will continue in a meaningful, productive nature to help ensure the overall goal is achieved; improved mental health services for Co. Wexford.

Nintendo outlined its plans in a blog post, confirming that from this summer, as it prepares for "upcoming changes in European battery regulations coming into effect in mid-February 2027, selected Nintendo products in Europe will begin to be replaced on a rolling basis by revisions that contain a user-replaceable battery." The company stressed that "there is no difference in functionality between current products and revised products containing user-replaceable batteries." The changes are a result of a 2023 European Union law that requires portable gaming consoles to have replaceable batteries by 2027. First proposed in 2020, the regulation only applies to future versions of handheld consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. Nintendo revealed that the following products will not be replaced by versions that contain user-replaceable batteries in Europe: - Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Controller for Nintendo Switch - Pokémon GO Plus + - Nintendo Switch - Nintendo Switch Lite - Nintendo Switch – OLED Model - Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - SEGA Mega Drive Control Pad for Nintendo Switch - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Controller for Nintendo Switch The first revised products are expected to become available from summer 2026 and will be rolled out between now and early 2027. "Due to a variety of factors, revised products may not become available in all European countries simultaneously," the company added. Specifically addressing the Switch, IGN reports Nintendo said: "Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch - OLED Model will all continue to be manufactured in 2026, and should be widely available in Europe all year. "From mid-February 2027, almost 10 years after Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, Nintendo will no longer sell to retailers hardware in the Nintendo Switch family of systems - specifically Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch - OLED Model." The company also confirmed to IGN that it "plan[s] to continue selling Nintendo Switch outside of regions where Nintendo of Europe conducts business." We recently learned that Nintendo Switch 2 helped US physical games spending see its first year-on-year increase since 2009.
